Salt Lake City, UT

Geotechnical Engineering and Construction firm ֲýConstruction was recently awarded the foundation contract for Phase 10 of Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s Barge Relocation Project.

The project involves moving the tailings decant barge system to a higher elevation along the decant pond water.

ֲýhas been part of two of the last three relocation projects at the mine in the last ten years due to a continual increase of elevation of decant pond water’s surface caused by tailings deposits.

The Phase 10 Relocation Project required micropiles for foundation support of two skid anchor pads and one winch pad for the bar anchorage.

Nicholson’s contract includes the installation of 60 micropilesat the three locations.

“We’re happy to be back at Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Copper Minefor another great project,” said Cody Telgheder, P.E., Operations Manager, ֲýConstruction. “ֲýhas been part of several projects at the mine for the last ten-plus years – and we’re thrilled to once again lend our expertise to projects that are optimizing a major driver of Utah’s economy.”

Nicholson’s work on the project starts in the beginning ofJune. The overall Phase 10 Relocation Project will be completed by mid-July.
